Rambut Siwi Temple

The sacred guard of west Bali

Rambut Siwi Temple is one of great temple in Bali and supposed to be the guard of west Bali. The temple stands at breathtaking cliff bank with overlooking Indian Ocean just in front of the temple. The word hair in Balinese word means Rambut and worship means Siwi, then it is recognized as Rambut Siwi Temple. As the story goes on in the local people, when Dang Hyang Nirartha passed through this village, he found many people suffered of illness then he gave one of his hair to villagers. Since of the priest power, the hair worshiped by the villagers and they got something better. In respecting the dedication of Dang Hyang Nirartha, the villagers built the temple.

The temple’s complex owns three main parts enclosures as the others temple structure in Bali. Those complexes include Luhur Temple, Penataran temple and Melanting Temple. The most of important one temple is Luhur Temple as the sacred hair kept here. Before entering the first temple, you will pass great gate with beautifully carved statues as the guards. The Joged Dance

Then, the dancers bring a fan or shawl in hand, she goes among the spectators and invites a man with her shawl or use her fan by touching the man waist. Sometimes, the dancers put her shawl on man neck. The man come to the stage under the hoot and shouts of the others crowd. The man called pengibing, who is supposed to be goading  as the joged girl. If he can dance better, he will get more appreciation, cheer and roar of the crowd. The man try to attract the girl with his best dance style but the girl try to avoid the man by smooth moving of the dance motion. The dance is very full of fun and exciting for any body. The situation of the village is still natural and very original. It seem there is no modern touch for all of life features. They live from traditional farming and some of them work as fishermen. The local system used is very classic  and unique. All of the daily life activities will be tied out by costume and tradition. The cultures presented show that their culture as the remains of Pre-historical period. They have different culture, costume, way of life and more distinguish from the common villages of Bali. The native people still keep and hold their original tradition strongly. One of the uniqueness tradition is the funeral system.

This is specifically related to people’s beliefs about illness and death. The Trunyan people believe that the dead body may not be burned since the smoke will go up to the mountain and dirty the palace of God on the peak. The dead bodies will just laid on the ground under the tree  which is called mepasah. The first system is those who are buried in a way of mepasah are those who at the time of death who have been married, people who are still single and young children. The second is buried / interred but not totally buried, just a half of body will be buried. Those who died were buried after their disabled body, or at the time of death there are wounds or people who suffer with smallpox, leprosy and others. People who die by unnatural like murdered or committed suicide is also buried. Uniquely, all of the death body put under the tree called Taru Menyan. There is no issue of bad smell of body odor because neutralized by the scent of tree. Then, the name of the village derived from the name of tree which mean fragrant tree. Actually, the word Trunyan come from the word Taru and Menyan. The word Taru means tree and the word Menyan means fragrant, the both of the word combined to be Trunyan and known until now.

The other uniqueness of Trunyan Village is the ruins of megalithic stone statue for 4 meters in height, the statue kept in the Temple of Pancering Jagat. The local people still sacred the statue. Trunyan Village also owns special dance named Brutuk Barong Dance. The dance is performed to request for safety and wealthy for  the people. The dance mainly intended to prevent the epidemic disease or any disaster which may hit the village. We are so proud that they can stand their culture and still exist in this 21th century. Amed and Tulamben

Amed beach lies at village of Culik in Abang regency. Amed is famous for its beaches, lined with traditional outrigger fishing boats. The prettiest bays are probably those at Jemeluk village and Lipah village but the whole stretch of coastline is very attractive.
