Water Palace of Sukasada Ujung
Taman Sukasada Ujung is situated at Ujung Countryside, as the its name where the word “Ujung means Edge” Tumbu village, Karangasem district, Karangasem regency. It is approximately 85 km from Airport Denpasar and 5 km from Amlapura. If you start from Denpasar, the journey will take about 2 hours and turn right to the south part of Karangasem town. Taman Sukasada is right located in the costal side with beautiful old building and the right place to visit during your vacation in Bali. It is noted as one of several cultural heritages which is still exist in Karangasem regency.
Taman Soekasada Ujung was built in 1919 on the reign of Karangasem Kingdom on the period of Anak Agung Anglurah Ketut Karangasem. Conversely, the launching of this site of water palace was performed in 1912. Few years ago, this palace was old Karangasem Empire heritage building which regally built to welcome and to serve important guests and Kings from neighboring countries, besides for the pleasure of the King and his royal family or meeting place by the king of Karangasem. By the year of 1909, this pool area was extended and developed by building some pools and also luxury building Bale Gili or Bale Kambang (floating building) with European style. The Bale building are connected by the bridges. All of the bridges are made from concrete with the beautiful ornament stand up sturdy on the fishpond and connect the old building with tropical garden around it.
The site of this water palace is the mixture of Balinese and European architectures design. There are three main and large ponds inside this site. In the center of the main pond, there is a building that connected to the edge of the pond by two bridges. The building in the middle of the pond is called Bale Kambang or Bale Gili means floating building seem it just looks float on the pond. Actually, the building is supported by some pillars. It is a unique place to visit in eastern part of Bali with high history and old remain buildings.
The strong European style has influenced in each form of building which is combined with the local Balinese style decoration. As you can see on the picture, it is one of the heritage buildings where its architecture was designed as combination of Balinese style and European.
If you take steps up to the highest level of the site, you will find a great statue of “warak” (rhinoceros). On this high place you will be able to observe a marvelous view of sea, hills with lush and green forest, the splendor of Mount Agung combined with the green terraced rice fields stretch out.
Most of the complex was destroyed in 1963 by the eruption of Mount Agung and also hit by earthquake in 1979. Some of recovery efforts had been applied to set up back the glory of this site of water palace by holding a reconstruction and revitalization project on it. Even though it is not as great as it was the true one, the stunning of the past time still can be seen until now.
